Mishpatim

January 29, 2022
Exodus 21:1-24:18; Jeremiah 34:8-22; Hebrews 9:15-22

Torah Portion “‘משפטים/Mishpatim” which means “Right Rulings/Judgments” and begins, “These are the right-rulings which you are to set before them:”

Our portion this week is built on last week’s wherein Yitro told Moshe to appoint leaders to help judge Israel. These leaders now needed to be trained in the more complex civil laws so they would understand them fully and be able to judge with wisdom. The scriptures were written to a people of a different time and culture than us and therefore a simple reading of them can be misleading unless we are taught the nuances of the ancient culture it was written to before applying them to current times and cultures. Pastor Richard discusses the rebellious and those who scoff. How are they similar? When is it a sin to rebel against leaders? Who is the angel The LORD sends ahead of the people? Who is Metatron? How do we live righteously in exile? Pastor Richard discusses all of these this week in Mishpatim.

This week our Haftorah teaching is delivered by Ro’ah Alpha from Jeremiah 34:8-22, and the New Covenant E-drash is delivered by Brother Mark from Hebrews 9:15-22.
