Chukat – חקת
July 9, 2022
Numbers 19:1-22:1; Judges 11:1-33; John 3:19-21
Torah Portion “חקת/Chukat” which means “Statute,” and begins, “1 Adonai said to Moshe and Aharon, 2 ‘This is the regulation from the Torah which Adonai has commanded. Tell the people of Isra’el to bring you a young red female cow without fault or defect and which has never borne a yoke.'”
According to the sages, todays portion is one of the more difficult portions to understand because of the nature of the Red Heifer. Being a decree given to cleanse impurity, how is it that this sacrifice can as well bring impurity? Ro’eh Richard brings a clearer understanding in how this unique sacrifice differs from all others and spans generations. In fact, a total of 9 Red Heifer sacrifices have been made and yet still a 10th to come by Messiah, spanning many generations between each heifer. There is also yet another unique tie of the Red Heifer sacrifice to the incident of the golden calf in how there was needed an atoning for the wicked actions of idolatry. This portion of the Red Heifer is juxtaposed to Miriam’s death as well as to Aaron’s death in which we learn that the death of a righteous person atones for sin. Interesting. Take a listen to what Ro’eh Richard teaches as he brings a fuller understanding from classical Judaism and the connection of the Red Heifer to the Suffering servant, the Messiah, and the role he plays in our atonement.
This week our Haftorah teaching is delivered by Ro’eh Richard from Judges 11:1-33, and the New Covenant E-drash is delivered by Brother Mark from John 3:19-21.
The video above contains the entirety of our service day, beginning with our Blessings and Worship portions.
